That’s not gone well
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
That’s an absolutely shit weld. No penetration at all into the welded material, just a pretty covering. This welder was essentially putting metal caulk on that seem.

Yeah, that’s serious garbage that probably never should have made it through QA.

How does one even go about accomplishing that?

Hot glue gun operator indeed . You’d think they’d Magnetic Particle T est a jack stand, that type of defect would stand out. Also maybe do some damn material prep. I know it’s stamped gauge plate, but It’s gotta hold a damn car. B evel the edge a bit. ESPECIALLY after just having a massive continent wide recall for the EXCACT same product.

By being really bad at your job and having no quality control oversight

There’s no way this is a one off occurrence either. That’s not a freak occurr ence or something, it’s just bad welding and no quality control.

I have a feeling that part of the problem is the design itself. That continuous rise of the legs up to a sharp v where the weld starts, focuses all that tension onto the start of that weld. I’m not a Civil, but I bet if you did a finite element analysis on that, you’d find the crotch of that v to be a very high stress point under load. Add in a shit weld and boom....mousetrap.

My guess is it’s welded by a robot and said robot wasn’t set up right.

The photo is also kind of hard to determine if it’s a multi pass weld or just the paint shine. It also looks like it’s been done by hand. There’s no reason a machine with Sub-Arc or a friction stir technique couldn’t have been used. I’m also surprised (my jacks included) that there’s not a backing / tie plate of some sort welded across the seam. It would be much stronger than just a butt weld.

But those things cost money, why do that when I can just hand this welder to this guy for $2/hr

That makes sense. And no QA as per MasterMario.

I believe you and HFV are correct.
